The context for sustainable business is being roiled by rapidly changing dynamics including heightened reporting and regulatory requirements, powerful new technologies like artificial intelligence, the increasing urgency of the climate crisis, a volatile (geo)political landscape, and pressures to scale back on just and sustainable business.
Amidst this turbulence, the fundamental goals of sustainable business remain the same, and as important as ever: accelerating the shift to an inclusive clean energy economy, ensuring that revolutionary new technologies are designed and deployed in service of society, creating more equitable societies and economies, and enabling business transformation that positions companies to succeed and work towards these goals.
Making progress on these goals will require novel competencies, new alliances, and different ways of thinking and working. For sustainability leaders, the new context presents paradoxes: increased emphasis on compliance over innovation, heightened visibility leading to backlash, and greater ambition accompanied by more scrutiny and skepticism.
